KC Porter

KC Porter is the kind of producer that music royalty turns to for award-winning, platinum-selling recordings. His work with Santana alone earned 9 Grammy Awards and over 27 million album sales. He’s also created alongside Michael and Janet Jackson, Bon Jovi, and Sting, just to name a few. Oh, and the Latin vocal phenom, Selena? KC Porter is the one who brought her to the American audience.

When it comes to recording such notable artists without limitations, KC Porter turns to his collection of Blue mics. With a fully loaded studio that includes Blue Bottle, Baby Bottle, Dragonfly, and even Mikey Digital, he captures the unique characters and tonal nuances of the music world’s most elite vocalists.

What have been some of your favorite microphones over the years?
I’ve been a staunch U47 user for over 30 years now. I’ve also used a U67 for artists like Justin Timberlake and Patti LaBelle, an Elux 251 on Santana, a vintage ELA M 251 on Celine Dion, a Sony C-800G for Mariah Carey, even an M149 on Michael Jackson. Each mic delivers a distinct sound, but there are no options—you get what you get.

What do you think of the Blue Bottle?
With the Blue Bottle, I have the best of every world imaginable. I can easily swap any of the capsules to keep the gorgeous full color spectrum I’m used to with the U47, plus I get an array of varied capsule options.

Right now I’m using the B-3 capsule. I just recorded the legendary Salsa singer, La India, as well as some vocals on my new album, and I love the way it sounds. The detail and full color are important to me. Some mics are either missing character or have too much color, but Bottle is unbelievable in its versatility. We just used Bottle for recent horn and string quartet sessions and it sounds perfect.

Which other Blue mics do you use?
We have the Dragonfly and Baby Bottle ready to go. Mikey is the go-to for any stereo viral video needed. And if I need to travel, I take the Baby Bottle.
